It's a common belief that horses and camels cannot be hitched together because of the difference in gait, but a photograph that was the inspiration for this painting tells otherwise.
Herzog, Russia, is located approximately 30 miles east of Saratov. It was a Catholic settlement of the north bank of the Bolshoi Karaman River. The colony was founded in 1766.
