The town of Pfeifer, Kansas is located ten miles south of Victoria (formerly Herzog, KS). The Volga-German emigrants who settled Pfeifer were from Pfeifer, Herzog, Kamenka, Katharinenstadt, Semenoka and Rotthamel, Russia. In 1884, the colonists moved Pfeifer from its original site located on railroad land to its present location on the south bank of the Smoky Hill River.
Holy Cross church was built in 1917-1918 and is a marvelous example of Gothic style architecture.
