"Workin' the Ohio Once Again"

The sternwheeler Chickie, originally named Titan, was built at Elizabeth, Pennsylvania in 1899. Later, Titan was renamed J.F. Douglas and later W.l. McKinney. The riverboat was most probably renamed Chickie when purchased at a Marshal's sale at Pittsburgh in 1935.

Chickie worked the Ohio and Kanawa Rivers until 1940 when, again, she was sold at a Marshal's sale for $450 in December of that year. She sank in the Allegheny River near Point Pittsburgh on January 10th, 1941 and later dismantled.

In the painting, the Chickie, upbound on the Ohio , has a small consist of coal barges in tow. She is passing the Wheeling Suspension bridge tower on Wheeling Island, West Virginia . The bridge was designed by Charles Ellet, Jr. and was constructed in 1849.
