Western Kansas is well suited for low-level flights. In the late 1980s, USAF Rockwell B-1B Lancers were no exception. The Niobrara Chalk pinnacle, known as Castle Rock in Gove County, was a major landmark along the 19th Century Smoky Hill Trail.

After a thunderstorm in July 2001, the tallest spire of the eons-old landmark collapsed. Even so, it is still an impressive sight out on the plains today. Voted on by people from all across the United States, it was announced in January 2008 as one of the 8 Wonders of Kansas.
