This is one of my favorite rail paintings. When working on the Volga German series, I became aware of the railroad which ran between Volgograd and Saratov, I noticed in an aerial photo of Kamenka the rail grade on the east side of the village. With the help of Steve Schreiber, Rosemary Larson and Chris White, I was able to reconstruct the overall look of Kamenka. The beautiful Catholic Church, the mills and the 2-8-0 S class engine, it simply fell together.
