With the help of Mac Beard at the Chesapeake and Ohio Historical Society, I started a new series of C and O, (now CSX) rail paintings. Mac suggested Thurmond, West Virginia.

With many images to work from, a very atmospheric photo portrayed wafts of steam rising vertically from the Allegheny class engines.

Adding the buildings of the small town, along with the various rail yard structures, the painting came together very well.
